A once-in-a-lifetime view of Saturn’s rings (or at least until the Cassini orbiter began its extended study of the ringed giant). In order to view Saturn from this perspective, Voyager 1 had to pass under the south pole of the planet, and turn its cameras toward its target after being slung behind the planet and above the northern hemisphere.

The shadow of the rings can be seen on the right side of the planet’s cloudtops, and the shadow of the planet can be seen on the rings in the left side of the image.
